Bike Plan

BTPO is starting a two-year process to update the 2005 Bicycle Plan. Since the bicycle plan was approved, bicycle lanes have been installed on South 5th, South 4th, Barton Road, Hawthorne Road, Pocatello Creek Road, and Alameda Road. While this increased the mileage of bicycle lanes the system is not connected. The Complete Streets movement is changing some of the thinking on bicycle plans and how to accommodate the needs of bicyclists. This change might affect the way public agencies approach implementing bicycle facilities. Over the next two-years our desire is to develop a bicycle plan which will allow the completion of a connected and safe bicycle system within a reasonable time frame.

The plan update will occur in two main phases. The first phase is to determine the current conditions of not only bike facilities but also the community support and other information which affect bicycle use. The second phase of the process is to develop the plan.

The outline for the inventory of current conditions is as follows:

  • Complete the League of American Bicyclist Bicycle Friendly Communities application;
  • Develop a survey on bicycle ridership;
  • Develop a methodology to determine bicycle count on the streets;
  • Develop an existing conditions report for the bicycle system;
  • Develop a Level of Service/Bicycle Compatibility Index; and
  • Develop needs and goals for the plan update.
The main goal from this year's activities would be to get to a point where we could start working on an update to the bicycle plan starting in October 2011.

To ensure a successful plan that will meet the needs of cyclists we need people to be involved.
